Gelcoat is a polyester coating that is often used to finish molded fiberglass construction projects or repair damaged gelcoated parts. Here are some tips for applying gelcoat: Clean: Clean the area and all tools with acetone before applying gelcoat. Choose a shady location: Avoid working in direct sunlight. Apply in layers: Apply gelcoat in 4-5 layers at approximately 5 mils each, allowing 15-20 minutes between layers. Use a thickness gauge: Use a gelcoat thickness gauge to ensure proper thickness. Use a spray gun: Spraying gel coat is recommended for more accurate and consistent coverage. Initiate: Gelcoat should be initiated (catalyzed) to set up to the point that you can touch it with a glove and not have it come up on your finger in 45-60 minutes from application.
